What you should know about "my IP"

How this works

This page shows the public egress IP you are using right now — the address websites, apps and platforms see. It is not the private address ipconfig / ifconfig prints on your computer. The most common questions are answered below.

Public IP vs private IP vs gateway IP

Your public IP is the globally routable address your ISP assigns to your broadband line or phone; that is what this page shows. Private IPs (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x) only exist inside your LAN and are handed out by your router; the internet never sees them. The gateway IP is usually the router's own LAN address (e.g. 192.168.1.1), your first hop to the internet.

Every device in the same home or office shares one public IP through NAT, so the address you see here matches what another device on the same Wi-Fi would see.

Why this differs from what ipconfig / ifconfig shows

System commands print the private address on your network adapter, while this page sees the public address after your router's NAT. The two only match when your computer dials in directly or your ISP gives the device a public address.

Why phone and laptop, home and office show different IPs

The public IP follows the access network: on 4G/5G your phone exits through the carrier's mobile gateway; on home Wi-Fi it uses the broadband address. Each network is a different egress. Residential public IPs are usually dynamic and may change after a modem reboot or every few days.

With both IPv4 and IPv6, which one do websites see?

On dual-stack networks browsers race both families (Happy Eyeballs) and usually pick whichever connects first — most often IPv6. That is why different "what is my IP" sites can show different answers: one IPv6, one IPv4. This page shows both.

Common questions

Does my IP reveal my exact location?

Not down to the street. IP geolocation is typically accurate to the city or district, based on ISP allocation records and geo databases; on mobile networks it may even point to the provincial capital. It reveals your rough area and ISP, not your home address.

How do I hide or change my IP?

A VPN, proxy or Tor makes websites see the exit server's IP instead. After switching, run a leak test to make sure DNS and WebRTC are not exposing your real address, and check the new IP's reputation to see whether platforms already flag it as a proxy or datacenter.

Is my IP fixed?

Most residential and mobile public IPs are dynamic and change on redial, modem reboot or ISP reallocation; business lines and cloud servers are usually static. Ask your ISP for a static IP or use dynamic DNS if you need a stable address.

Does this page log my IP?

The detection request goes through our servers, so ordinary access logs are produced; we do not sell or share them. Copying and display happen locally in your browser.
